BODY STRESS AND ITS EFFECTS

What is body stress?

Nowadays Body Stress plays a huge role in people’s lives. Yet, only few realize they are putting a lot of stress on their body and are not aware of the impact it actually has on them. Many vague problems and symptoms without an unestablished cause, can actually be explained by something simple and logic as ”body stress”. Whenever there is an overdose of stress, the body locks in tension in the muscles and reduces its efficiency.

There are three different types of body stress our body can pick up on:
1. Mechanical stress: e.g. skiing or snowboarding accidents, car accidents, falling from the stairs; bad posture (sitting, laying or lifting), damaging Fitness exercises
2. Emotional stress: e.g. stress from work, family / relationship issues, pressure to perform at work/ in school; depression, anxiety, shock, sadness
3. Chemical stress: this can be divided into toxics you inhale (e.g. deodorant), digest (e.g. alcohol or specific foods), have skin contact with (e.g. face creme) or viruses inside your body (e.g. the flu)

All these stresses work as a force against the body and influence our muscles. Our muscles have two tasks: to keep up our body and to move it – but also to protect it. When the body fails to adapt effectively to stressful circumstances, stress overload is reached and the muscles may involuntarily clench in protective action. This muscular response is usually the body’s attempt to reduce mobility or limit movement of an affected joint, tendon or tissue, in order to protect that area of our bodies.

When normal stresses and strains in our muscles reach the point of overload, this tension may become locked into the body’s physical structures. This stored tension is known as ‘body stress’. Over time this accumulative progression of body stress exerts pressure on the spinal nerves and may result in pain, numbness, muscle weakness, stiffness, distorted posture and impaired functioning. Pain is our signal that something is wrong with the body.

At first one may just gradually feel fatigued but later pain, stiffness, or numbness may set in. The effects may vary, but the result could be a slow decline in overall health. This could lead to different kinds of issues like headaches and migraines, digestion difficulties, back/neck/shoulder aches, difficulty breathing, etc.

Sometimes stored body stress is so severe that even just one small movement can set off a severe cascade of painful symptoms, not necessarily only in the problem area but also other parts of the body will get impacted. Therefore, body stress needs to be effectively and precisely released to encourage and restore normal functioning to stop the cycle of stress overload and compensation.

The effects of body stress?

Our bodies are self-healing and designed to handle the onslaught of daily strains and stresses, in fact not all stress is harmful. We require a certain level of stress in our lives to promote growth and development through repeated positive adaptations – for example, Olympic athletes have to continually push themselves, putting their bodies under a certain level of stress in order to perfect their technique and reach their full potential.

However, when stress is intense or prolonged and immunity or sleep has been affected, the tension cannot be released through normal means. The body starts to take action to limit and prevent further damage by compensation, “splinting”, or protective action in the form of muscle cramps, spasms or reduced mobility.

As a result the natural healing process is disrupted and this may cause us to lose optimum functioning.  This in turn creates even more stress. If we don’t allow ourselves rest and adequate healing time, the “stress effect” is compounded. This is why one needs to take intervention to break this vicious cycle.

Who has body stress?

Body stress is something that can occur in every person’s life and body. From babies to elderly people. From the most active person to the person who doesn’t find time to participate in sports. It is caused by both the present and the past. If you had a big accident a couple of years ago, chances are high this is still bothering you somehow.
